Piston coating: less heat and more durability

The pistons are among the most important parts of your engine and are also exposed to the most severe stresses. Heat is a particular problem for pistons, and this is precisely why piston coatings are available. Especially at high performance, in racing and ambitious tuning, the coating protects the pistons from heat and makes them more durable. Here you can learn everything about the piston coating of JE Pistons and Mahle.

BAR-TEK® piston coatings for JE and MAHLE pistons

Your pistons are constantly exposed to different strains. These include heat and pressure as internal factors as well as various external factors such as the climate as well as the engine oil and fuel used. In order to make your pistons more resistant to these influences, you can obtain special coatings for JE Pistons and MAHLE pistons from us.

Coating the pistons reduces the heat and significantly better dissipates it. This prolongs the service life of your pistons tremendously. The coating also reduces the need for piston crown cooling. In addition, the coating prevents you from experiencing performance drops and can fully enjoy your horsepower.

In addition to the positive impact on performance, there are also advantages for the environment: the coating lowers emission rates, because the higher exhaust gas temperature ensures faster the exhaust post-treatment heats up faster after a cold start.

All benefits of piston coatings at a glance

  • Protection against heat
  • Transmission of heat to the combustion chamber
  • Prolonged piston service life
  • Improved dry-running properties
  • Less friction and wear on the cylinder bore
  • Improved sliding properties
  • Prevents piston slap during cold start
  • Lower oil consumption
  • Prevents the engine knocking

Piston coating for JE Pistons

JE Pistons offers an optional coating of the piston crown and piston skirt for its forged pistons. The coating of the piston crown protects the piston from increased heat absorption, since it reflects the heat and returns it to the combustion chamber. The ceramic spray coating is burned onto the piston crown. It also prolongs the service life of the components and copes with extreme heat and top performance.

The coating of the JE Pistons piston skirt (‘Perfect Skirt coating’) leads to less friction and better sliding and dry-running properties in the cylinder. It adapts to the size of the bore and thus ensures a much less play. In addition, this grants you more safety during cold starts, with absolutely no piston slap.

The delivery time for the coating is approx. 3 – 4 weeks.
The price is per piston.
The coating is available only in conjunction with a new piston set from JE Piston.

In this video, you will find out more about how the different piston coatings from JE Pistons look and work:

Piston crown coating for MAHLE pistons

MAHLE has developed a special coating for its pistons: the MAHLE GRAFAL® anti-friction coating, which is applied to the piston skirts. It reduces air resistance, abrasion, wear, and noise. In addition, MAHLE pistons are provided with a grey phosphate coating, a dry-film lubricant that protects the pin bore of the piston from seizures and the ring groove from microwelds.

The piston coatings from MAHLE are explained in this video:

Dear team ! I hope you are doing well , i have gone through your website for piston coatings nd need your help . I have a oppose piston engine 1200hp 6 cylinder two stroke engine. after 4 hours of testing on the test bench the pistons scuff. please suggest the coatings on the piston and rings. I am sharing the pictures for your reference. Below the crown there is a ring as well that is installed by removing the crown fitter with four bolts. please guide which coating is best to avoid scuffing

Good morning, I do see the benefits of coating a piston and read you only do new pistons. However, what to do if no replacement pistons are available. Is coating also possible on clean, perfect functional, pistons straight out a running engine. Regardless of any responsibility issues, when something goes wrong during applying (does that happen? One (piston) coating company did not wanted to coat as they are not able to get another piston 'of the shelf'... if something goes wrong....). I am after a company that can coat my pistons (4) with a thermal barrier (crown) and a friction (skirt) coating. Do you know a company who might help me with this? Thank you in advance, kind reg, Gerard.
