VW Golf 8 tuning project
We do what VW wasn't allowed to do: Golf 8 with over 700 PS!
The VW Golf has not only been the icon among compact cars for decades, it is also one of our favorite tuning projects. With each Golf generation, we break world records and redefine the rules of performance enhancement on our test bench. The Golf 8 is no exception. We were the first to take on the challenge and put fire under the brand-new Golf.
Here you get an exclusive look behind the scenes of our pioneering work and learn how we turn the Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI into the most powerful compact sports cars in the world. On the way to the BAT-TEK standard 1000 hp, we have so far achieved over 700 hp in the Golf 8 R. But that's not the end of it! As always, we measure our success against previous models and increase our skills and performance with each vehicle.

Information about Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI
The starting point: The engine in the Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI
The heart of both vehicles is the EA888 2.0 TSI evo4, an inline four-cylinder engine with turbocharging. It is one of the most modern units in the group and is already known for its high durability, efficient direct injection and of course the enormous tuning potential that we love so much. As standard, the Golf 8 R delivers a strong 333 hp (245 kW) and 420 Nm, while the GTI reaches 245 hp (180 kW) and a torque of 370 Nm. In contrast to the GTI, the Golf 8 R features all-wheel drive to ensure better power transfer.
When it comes to cooling, the GTI also has to make do with the smaller system which, although sufficient for its stock output, very quickly reaches its limits once power is increased. Cooling and exhaust routing in the Golf 8 R are more robust, but of course must also be upgraded from a certain performance level. The more powerful Golf also comes with the stronger gearbox, which is why you will only find the Golf 8 R with a 7-speed DSG, designed for higher torque. The Golf 8 GTI, on the other hand, is available with either a manual transmission or DSG.
Turbocharger and charging for Golf 8 GTI and Golf 8 R
The two also differ in terms of the turbocharger: the GTI is equipped with a smaller Garrett turbo, whose strength lies in early boost build-up and fast response. It delivers plenty of everyday driving fun but reaches its limits more quickly when it comes to increasing performance. In the eighth-generation Golf R, a larger turbocharger from Continental delivers higher peak power, but has the disadvantage that response in the lower rev range is slightly delayed. Nevertheless, with its turbocharger, the Golf 8 R offers a superb starting point for ambitious tuners, as it has significantly more reserves.
Revolutionary development: The first upgrade turbochargers for Golf 8 GTI and R together with GARRETT
As pioneers in motorsports, we wanted to develop the world’s first upgrade turbochargers for the Golf 8. Bartek himself calls turbochargers the supreme discipline of performance enhancement, because the entire performance of a vehicle stands and falls with forced induction. That’s why, as the first in the world, we tested, calibrated, and co-developed upgrade turbochargers together with Garrett, one of the most renowned manufacturers of turbochargers, on both vehicles (the Golf 8 GTI and Golf 8 R). Night-long wrenching sessions on the test bench and our many years of experience in the design of high-performance turbochargers were necessary to develop the Garrett PowerMax (Stage 1) turbochargers. As always, our goal was to make even more power possible, which is why we then developed Stage 2 and even Stage 3 turbochargers for the Golf 8 R.
720 hp cracked: Next world record by BAR-TEK®
After we reinforced the engine identical to our Golf 7 (conrods and co), we then cracked the next world record at the beginning of 2025 when we achieved 720 hp and 740 Nm with our Golf 8 R. For this we converted the fuel supply so that we could inject more. In the process we also found errors on the stock engine; plastic water flanges on the cylinder head could not handle the enormous power and broke off and the water pump failed. We then replaced the inferior plastic parts with our components, which are made from solid aluminium and can withstand the power. Another major obstacle on the way to our record was the software. As with every new model, the manufacturer also does everything possible here to ensure that we get into the system as late as possible in order to further develop it. But that has never stopped us from doing pioneering work and driving revolutionary developments forward.
Chasing lap times and data logging with the Golf 8
We are happy to show what our Golf 8 can do when chasing lap times on various racetracks, including the L8-Night, or on a privately rented airfield where we test as much as possible. On our test bench, all the figures also come to light. In this video, Bartek shows how much Power in our Golf 8 is hidden and also compares the values of our turbocharger with those of the Garret PMax Stage 1 turbo.
BAR-TEK® Golf 8 at the NitrolympX
Because it’s not enough for us to see our vehicles smoking on the dyno, you’ll also find us regularly at the most important motorsport events. The premier class of the quarter mile in Europe, the NitrolympX, is even supported by us as main sponsor. The Nitro is the third largest dragster event in the world, where you can really experience the fastest cars up close, among other things on the Turbo-Total Lane named after us.
